Chiropractors Do Something Unique

We, chiropractors, do something other primary healthcare providers aren’t trained to do. We are specially trained to locate stress in your body that can interfere with your health. These stressors are called subluxations. Subluxations are tiny, commonly occurring misalignments or distortions of your spine and structural system that can interfere with the nerves that carry messages throughout your body.

Subluxations are dangerous because they may impinge (“pinch”) the nerves that connect your brain and spinal cord to your muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, discs, glands, and other internal organs. This can diminish your overall body function.

How can you tell if you have a subluxation? Some subluxations are associated with pain or malfunction, but many don’t cause pain or apparent symptoms.

For example, imagine you have a vertebra out of position, causing nerve pressure that affects nerves going to the stomach. Your digestion may be impaired, your stomach may be “nervous,” and you may have ulcers or other conditions, yet you feel no back or spinal pain. This is because not all nerves carry pain messages.

Your heart, lungs, kidneys, intestines, bladder, eyes, ears, throat, and other internal organs are connected to our brain by many nerves that emit from your brain and spine. The connected systems will suffer if these nerves are irritated by a subluxation.

For over a hundred years, the recorded benefits of subluxation correction include the successful treatment of ear infections, asthma, allergies, cancer, heart disease, ADHD, autism, headaches, backaches, digestive problems, vision, and hearing problems, as well as improvement of overall immunity, balance, brain function, concentration, IQ, energy-and many more.

Researching Chiropractic: Fibromyalgia, Scoliosis, & Meniere’s Disease

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception. There is no limit to the health problems that respond positively to chiropractic care.

Fibromyalgia in a 64-year-old

A 64-year-old woman with fibromyalgia was medically diagnosed 6 years before beginning chiropractic care. In addition, she complained of sleep apnea, loss of coordination, glaucoma, degenerative disc disease, and changes in bowel habits.

Using X-ray and other tools, an upper cervical subluxation was discovered at her atlas (C1) vertebrae.

She received upper cervical care for three months. At the time of this study, she reported 80% relief from symptoms and an improvement in energy level. (1)

Scoliosis in a 10-year-old girl

This was the patient’s first time under chiropractic care. Analysis revealed a 16.2-degree right thoracolumbar scoliosis, measured from her 12th thoracic vertebra to her 6th lumbar vertebra.

She was adjusted for three months. X-rays, taken at 3 months, showed a 28.4% improvement in her scoliosis (a decrease of 4.6 degrees). (2)

Meniere’s Disease

A forty-eight-year-old woman, a retired registered nurse, was diagnosed with right unilateral Meniere’s Disease (MD). Her symptoms included many episodes of dizziness with nausea and vomiting as well as drop attacks. She also had low-frequency hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sense of ear fullness with pain.

Chiropractic care consisted of twelve visits over six days. She returned for a reevaluation four months later. All her complaints were relieved, except hearing loss, though it did improve. (3)

Researching Chiropractic: Correcting issues in toddlers

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception. How many people suffering, on drugs, and facing a life of limitation could be helped by chiropractic care?   Probably most of them.

Autism in a 3-year-old

The child was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. He had delayed developmental milestones, an inability to eat solid foods, was unable to gain weight, and had a limited vocabulary of a few words. Additionally, he had an aversion to being touched, had sleep deprivation, and suffered from constipation. Past history included a difficult pregnancy, labor, and delivery for the patient’s mother. The child was fully vaccinated.

Vertebral subluxations were found upon examination and corrected by the chiropractor.

By his third chiropractic visit, he was comfortable with the doctor touching him and his parents reported that he is not usually comfortable with even his grandmother touching him. His parents reported that he had been trying to say his first words and had improvements in constipation, behavior, and sleep habits.

Adjustments continued and over a 2-month period, the child continued improvements in sleep patterns, behavior, sensitivity to touch, expansion of vocabulary, constipation, and retained primitive reflexes following chiropractic adjustments. The patient continues chiropractic care. (1)

A two-year-old boy with Developmental Delays and Otitis Media

A two-year-old boy was first brought in for chiropractic care because of an altered ability to crawl and developmental delays. He also had a middle ear infection with effusion (OME). His birth had been traumatic and he had been fully vaccinated.

Positive responses to care began after six visits. His mother reported he began climbing a lot more and that he also had started using pronouns. He began pointing to things and tried to say the name of them. His vocabulary had exploded since beginning chiropractic care. The child’s speech and movement improved after being adjusted over a two-year period. His ear infection resolved. (2)

A Five-Year-Old with Sensory Modulation Disorder and Constipation

The patient is a 5-year-old girl with a history of birth trauma, developmental delays, sensory processing, sleep difficulties, and other functional disorders.  The child had been fully immunized.

Following chiropractic adjustments, the patient’s nervous system was able to function at a higher level, resulting in improved bowel function, mood, ability to concentrate and engage with her environment, less-fragmented more-restful sleep, improved mood, and ability to focus. (3)

Dr Charmaine here: recently had a 2 yr old girl come to the office for digestion and sleeping issues. After her second adjustment, her mom was reporting that she was a much happier child and the initial issues were now resolved.

Researching Chiropractic: Hearing Loss, Speech Difficulty, Acid Reflux, and more

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception. How many people suffering, on drugs, and facing a life of limitation could be helped by chiropractic care?   Probably most of them.

Hearing loss and Speech Difficulty

A boy with mild to moderate hearing loss was falling behind in class. As a result, his speech was difficult to understand. MDs recommended tympanostomy (ear) tubes to be surgically inserted. The parent decided to see if chiropractic care would help.

The parents brought in their child for chiropractic care. Subluxations were located and corrected. After two adjustments his hearing deficits resolved In addition, his speech and school performance greatly improved.

Acid Reflux in a Two-Month-Old

A two-month-old baby had severe acid reflux and constipation since birth. Her pediatrician prescribed Prilosec for her acid reflux which did not help. The infant was unable to eat without spitting up, unable to sleep because of pain, and was visibly straining and in pain while trying to defecate.

The patient was brought in for chiropractic care. She had 12 chiropractic visits over 6 weeks. Her acid reflux, constipation, and sleep difficulties were completely resolved.

Seizures in a 3-year-old

A 3-year-old had a history of absence seizures (staring into space for about 15-20 seconds). He had up to five seizures a day since age one. After age two he began to have clonic seizures where he would stare off and his arms would quickly jerk back and forth bend at the elbows and go and forth across his body for 15-20 seconds.

He also exhibited self-aggressive behavior when he would hit his head with his fists 5-10 times a day. The parents could not recall any trauma that their son may have experienced in the past however the child was fully vaccinated. Seizures are reported as an adverse effect of vaccination.

A chiropractic examination revealed the patient had an atlas subluxation. The child received a total of 10 spinal adjustments over the eight-week period. After his first adjustment, he experienced only two clonic seizures per day. At eight weeks, his parents reported that their son was having one absence seizure every other day (down from five a day) and his self-aggressive behaviors had stopped altogether.

Scoliosis is a 5-year-old

A 5-year-old girl with thoracolumbar (mid and lower back) scoliosis began chiropractic care. In addition to scoliosis, she suffered from poor sleep and headaches.

The child’s spine was analyzed; vertebral subluxations were located in her cervical (neck). She received adjustments to eliminate the subluxations.

Twenty-eight days after beginning care, her thoracolumbar scoliosis decreased from 130 degrees to 00 degrees. The patient received no traction, nor did she perform any corrective exercises. There was also a reduction in headaches and an improvement in sleep.

 Breastfeeding, Other Difficulties, and Chiropractic

13 case reports, 5 articles, and 3 literature reviews were reviewed.

Chiropractic care was reported to help many infant nursing and other difficulties such as problems with latching, reflux, regurgitation, poor sleep, excessive gas, vomiting, refusal to nurse, cranial plagiocephaly, and torticollis, excessive crying.

Difficulty with breastfeeding and infant digestive and other issues affect all socioeconomic groups and cultures. Chiropractic care provides numerous benefits for an infant’s health as well as for the mother in the long and short-term.

Difficulty conceiving a child

A 29-year-old woman with a 3-year history of infertility began chiropractic care. She had failed attempts with intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization. She had taken estrogen modulators for 5 months clomiphene citrate (Clomid) with no success. Additionally, she reported experiencing 3-4 headaches per week. She had been in a major car accident five years prior.

Vertebral subluxations were found at different segments in the spine. Adjustments were made at the sites of vertebral subluxations. During the course of the first two months of care, her headaches resolved. After a later visit to an obstetrician, her pregnancy was confirmed.  Vertebral subluxations were adjusted throughout the remainder of her pregnancy, and she was able to have a successful vaginal birth.

After multiple failed conventional medical treatments, 16 chiropractic adjustments over a span of 55 days resulted in a once-infertile female being able to conceive a child and carry the baby to term.

How Will I Feel After Getting a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Why is chiropractic the most popular non-surgical, non-drug healing art in the USA and the world? Because it works!  People feel better and get better under chiropractic care. The adjustment that is meant to correct subluxations (blockages/distortions/stress) can benefit your entire body, all your organs, even your brain and nervous system as well as body structure.

How do people feel after chiropractic care? It depends. Some feel an immediate difference, some feel different over time. Here are some common responses:

  • I feel taller
  • I feel lighter
  • I feel more stable, more balanced
  • Wow, walking is easier
  • The pain is gone!
  • I can take a deeper breath
  • Why do I feel like crying?
  • I can walk straighter
  • I can sleep better
  • I feel more connected
  • I feel like a weight just lifted from my body
  • Can I bring in my wife/husband/children?
  • and the list goes on and on.

Sometimes healing doesn’t always feel great – sometimes as you heal you release old injuries or detoxify to release poisons. You need that for complete healing (referred to as retracing). If you experience retracing, you may feel yucky (for a relatively short time). Be patient and as a general rule, do not take drugs to relieve symptoms because that may prevent complete healing.

Uncomfortable symptoms may include the pain of old injuries finally healing completely, fever, diarrhea, skin eruptions, rashes, and even vomiting. If retracing does occur (usually on the initial visit) don’t worry, it is good for you, and don’t worry, it is usually temporary.

Survival – Ashes to Ashes….how to make the space between awesome!

For a while onlookers stand about the corpse marveling at its silence, its stillness, its apparent peace, it is performing its own ancient ritual of death. Its complex systems, organs, tissues, and cells are decomposing, disintegrating, and returning to the simpler forms from which they arose.

There is no stopping this process for the great force, energy, and wisdom that kept this body in constant organization, complexity, and regeneration are gone. What remains is the universal tendency of the complex to return to the simpler, like a delicate house of cards collapsing upon itself.

Now there is no resistance to the onslaughts of the elements. The dead no longer shiver from the cold of night, nor perspire from the heat of the day. The sun dries the skin to dust, and the wind blows the dust away. Our body returns to the earth from which it sprang forth to become part of a greater whole. As a Navajo proverb declares “The earth is a mother who never dies.”

Yet we die. Inevitably. It is no miracle that death ultimately overtakes us; the miracle is that life can, even briefly, flourish, that we are able to resist the law of entropy, the tendency of the organized to irreversibly become disorganized; to return to the earth.

What buoys us up on this hostile sea of existence and mocks the universal forces around us? How do we maintain our inner uniqueness, our multitude of complex molecular and biological forms and activities, and stubbornly refuse to merge into the elements?

That is the miracle of life. All living beings possess the ability to maintain inner complexity, to adapt to the environment.

How is this done?

We are filled with adaptation mechanisms. For example, body temperature must hover around 98.6 degrees F. for our chemistry to function properly no matter what the outside temperature or how active or inactive we are.

On a torrid 110-degree August day you walk into a frigid 65-degree supermarket, yet your body temperature remains the same. How is this done?  Adaptation mechanisms such as shivering, or perspiring keep our body temperature within a safe range.

Adaptation mechanisms keep us floating upon the sea of existence. They balance blood sugar, blood pressure, and hormone levels, and respond to thousands of physical and emotional stresses every day. They all say the same thing – survive! Survive and thrive amidst life’s challenges.

You’re at war

Your world is constantly assaulting you with physical, emotional, toxic, environmental, and chemical stresses. We are fighting a constant war of adaptation. It is a war of high stakes – your life and health! Life requires constant adaptation.

How is this war fought?

Symptoms are the mechanisms your body uses to bring you into balance (or homeostasis). Symptoms may be uncomfortable, but they are necessary. These include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, sneezing, coughing, sweating, shivering (as mentioned above), mucus and pus, skin eruptions, fatigue, lack of appetite (natural fasting), and many more. These are natural ways you cleanse, detox, and heal.

Symptoms are not diseases; they are the cure for diseases. Suppressing symptoms can lead to deeper health problems. Whether or not you’ll get symptoms and how quickly they go away depends on your ability to respond to and adapt to challenges.

Adaption is Emotional as Well as Physical

Two people may experience great emotional stress such as divorce or death in a family. One will grieve for a short time and recover while the other may fall into a long depression. Why? It depends on how well they can adapt.

Chiropractic for Adaptation

Your nervous system: brain, spinal cord, and billions of nerves that travel to every nook and cranny in your body continuously transmit information. Adaptation is dependent upon this communication. You need a healthy nervous system so it may send messages all over your body so you may adapt most efficiently,

Structural subluxations can interfere with your nervous system, weakening you on many levels. Subluxations may stress your brain, spinal cord, and outlying nerves. Chiropractic care is dedicated to locating and correcting your subluxations, permitting your nervous system to operate with less stress – helping you adapt physically, chemically, and emotionally.

Keep yourself and your family adapting at their peak – get regular chiropractic care for your brain, spinal cord, and nervous system health.

Researching Chiropractic: Meniere’s Disease, Autism, Allergies

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception. There seems to be no limit to the health problems that respond to chiropractic care.  How many people suffering, on drugs, and facing a life of limitation could be helped by chiropractic care?  Probably most of them.

A 59-year-old woman with Meniere’s Disease

This woman had left ear hearing loss, extreme vertigo (dizziness), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), brain fog, and pressure in her forehead area.

Medical doctors gave her three steroid injections, but she had no relief.  She sought out chiropractic care as a last resort.

Upper neck (cervical) subluxations (atlas and axis) were found on analysis. An atlas correction (adjustment) was performed.  She did not need another correction for 72 days!

Her vertigo resolved immediately; her tinnitus went from a 10 to a 2 on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the worst. Her brain fog and forehead pressure went away, and her hearing was restored.

She was soon able to go for long walks, drive, exercise, and work. Her overall health and well-being greatly improved after being under care. (1)

Improvement in the language of an autistic boy

A 17-year-old boy with autism, altered behavioral patterns, language deficits, sleeping problems, constipation, and earaches was brought in for chiropractic care.

He was under care for 24 months during which time chiropractic adjustments to reduce subluxation were administered.

The patient responded favorably to chiropractic care. He demonstrated a decrease in the frequency of earaches, normalized sleep patterns, and improved language development, behavioral patterns, and digestion. (2)

Allergies and asthma in a 38-year-old

A 38-year-old woman was suffering from allergy-induced asthma since she was a teenager. She also complained of allergies, chronic sinus issues, headaches, and numbness in her right leg.

Adjustments were delivered to subluxations within the spine over the course of six months. Various analysis procedures such as surface electromyography (EMG) and thermography (heat reading) were used to monitor her progress.

After six months of care, the patient reported complete improvement in her asthma and allergies as well as improvement in her other complaints. (3

Researching Chiropractic: Piglets, Down Syndrome, Low Back Pain

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception. There seems to be no limit to the health problems that respond to chiropractic care. How many people suffering, on drugs, and facing a life of limitation could be helped by chiropractic care?

Probably most of them.

Piglets and chiropractic.

Chiropractic for piglets?  Why not? Every creature with a spinal column can have subluxations and can benefit from chiropractic care. There are many chiropractors who regularly work on dogs, cats, horses, and other creatures.

In this study, researchers measured the rate of weight gain in baby pigs. 109 piglets that were weaned on the same day were captured and randomly assigned into a control (CON) or an adjusted (ADJ) group.

It was found that on average the adjusted group reached the ideal weight 6 days sooner than the control (non-adjusted) group. Feed costs for the adjusted group were thus reduced. (1)

P.S. An earlier study with chickens showed chiropractic adjustments improved palatability, overall health, and rate of weight gain. Again, something that could cut costs and increase profits. (2)

These studies show the positive effects of animal chiropractic in livestock production settings.

Down Syndrome in a 7-week-old infant.

A seven-week-old girl with Down Syndrome was brought in for chiropractic care because of nursing and sleeping issues. Typically, the infant was brought to the clinic when she was having cough, congestion, tactile fremitus (a vibration transmitted through the body), and wheezing problems.

A chiropractic examination revealed that she had upper cervical, thoracic and sacrum subluxations. Her subluxations were adjusted using various chiropractic techniques.

After the adjustment, the mother reported that the infant was getting stronger, had less congestion, was breathing with fewer wheezes, and her chest was cleaner. The parents reported feeling less fremitus on her chest than before.

The patient had constipation for three days when she was brought in for care. The infant defecated right after the adjustment.

After 3 visits the baby’s feeding and sleeping issues were resolved. The child continued chiropractic care. After 2 years and 7 months of care, her muscle tone, breathing, and immune function were enhanced.

The mother reported that chiropractic care helped to increase the infant’s daily function and overall health such as latching and regular sleep patterns. (3)

Low Back pain in a 9-year-old with tethered cord syndrome.

A 9-year-old boy entered the office complaining of a dull, achy low back pain that occurred during football practicing and playing. He had a decreased range of motion and vertebral subluxations. X-rays revealed he had an extra lumbar vertebra (6 instead of 5).

The child had an MRI that revealed a condition known as spinal cord tethering. His spinal abnormalities included lower spinal cord and malformations.

The boy received chiropractic adjustments twice a week for 3 weeks and then once per week for 6 weeks. He was also given stretching and exercises to be done at home.  At the one-year follow-up, the patient was able to play several high school sports without any complications. (4)

Researching Chiropractic: Brain Function, Fibromyalgia, Birth

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception. There seems to be no limit to the health problems that respond to chiropractic care. How many people suffering, on drugs, or facing a life of limitation could be helped by chiropractic care?

Probably most of them.

Chiropractic improves brain function in children.

Thirty-seven pediatric patients with neurological disorders were enrolled in a chiropractic clinic to see if subluxation correction would influence their brain function measured by improved processing, engagement, learning, and connection to the surroundings. In addition, primitive reflexes, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, auditory verbal skills, eye movement, and visual cognitive skills were evaluated.

Learning included ease of completing homework, ability to concentrate on a task/goal, handwriting, reading comprehension, organization/planning, spelling, understanding concepts, vocabulary and expression, attention/focus, and participation in extracurricular activities,

Vertebral subluxations when found at specific spinal segments were adjusted. During care, patient outcomes were measured via both objective and subjective measurements.

There was an improvement of 74.1% in quality of life measured by parent surveys in all measured areas such as intra/interpersonal skills outcomes, feelings about school, relationships with peers, mood, anxiety, rigidity/demand for sameness, family relationships, loss of temper/emotional outbursts, and ability to self-regulate emotions.

There was also steady improvement in getting to sleep, quality of sleep, amount of sleep, eating habits, digestive health overall, frequency of bowel movements, and energy levels. (1)

Fibromyalgia in a 64-year-old woman.

The patient was a 64-year-old woman diagnosed with fibromyalgia diagnosed 6 years prior. She also complained of sleep apnea, loss of coordination, glaucoma, degenerative disc disease, and changes in bowel habits.

An upper cervical (upper neck) subluxation was determined using X-rays and other forms of analysis.

The patient received chiropractic care for three months and by then had 80% relief of symptoms and an improvement in energy. (2)

Vaginal birth after cesarean section.

The patient is 40-year-old woman 33 weeks pregnant with her third child. She had two prior cesarean sections due to malposition of the fetus, deceleration of heart rate during labor, and Pitocin intolerance.

Vertebral subluxations that decreased her pelvis and spinal range of motion, abnormal posture, and muscle spasms were observed during the chiropractic examination. The patient was adjusted weekly. Her progress was closely monitored. A total of ten adjustments were administered and the mother was successful in having a vaginal birth after a cesarean. (3)

Researching Chiropractic: Tremors, Breech Baby, Headaches

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception. There seems to be no limit to the health problems that respond to chiropractic care. How many people suffering, on drugs, or facing a life of limitation could be helped by chiropractic care?

Probably most of them.

Essential tremors in a 75-year-old.

Essential tremors are one of the most common forms of involuntary movement disorders. They are most noticeable when eating and writing. This is not to be confused with Parkinson’s Disease where the patient’s movements occur while they are resting. According to some sources, approximately 5% of people over the age of 65 suffer from essential tremors

In this case, a 75-year-old man was suffering from essential tremors that were getting progressively worse over the prior four years. A chiropractic examination using radiographs (X-rays) and neurologic and orthopedic tests revealed vertebral subluxations in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.

The patient’s subluxations were addressed (adjusted). He had three visits a week for four weeks and then was reevaluated at the 12th visit.

At the reassessment, the patient reported that his tremors had improved by 50% since beginning care. The patient stated he was now able to write more efficiently and was now able to eat cereal with a spoon more easily. He continues chiropractic care with the hope that his tremors will eventually completely resolve. (1)

Breech Presentation.

A 30-year-old woman who was 39 weeks pregnant had a breech birth presentation (confirmed by ultrasound). She came to chiropractic care. She had never been to a chiropractor before but was referred to a pediatric chiropractic office because of the positive results another patient had seen from getting adjusted while pregnant.

The Webster Technique was administered to her which consisted of a sacral adjustment and round ligament trigger point release.  The mother noted significant movement from the baby after the second adjustment. The fetal presentation was confirmed to have changed from frank breech to vertex position via an ultrasound done by her OB/GYN.

The patient came in a total of four times and received the exact same adjustment each visit.

The patient went into labor within 48 hours after her last adjustment and gave birth to a baby girl through normal vaginal birth. There were no complications. (2)

Chronic headaches in a six-year-old.

A 6-year-old boy had been suffering from chronic headaches for two years. He experienced these headaches every day or every other day. reported experiencing headaches described as stabbing and intense.

Medical doctors could find no cause and prescriptions for ibuprofen were ineffective.  The pediatrician subsequently referred the patient to the nearest children’s hospital for further medical workup.

The child was given an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and a CT scan (computer tomography) to access the cause.  All findings were negative. Referrals were also made to a “concussion specialist” and a neurologist without much help. The patient and his mother returned to his pediatrician who suggested chiropractic care.

At the chiropractic office, subluxations were discovered in the child’s cervical spine (neck). The subluxations were corrected (adjusted). The child had10 visits over a 2-month period. After his 5th visit, his headaches disappeared and did not return.  10.6% of children experience headaches and few ever know about or receive chiropractic care. Most are placed on drugs and the cause (the subluxation) is never addressed. (3)
